The Silver Jubilee marked the the 25th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne.
In Three Holes the organising committee included chairman Hugh Beckett, secretary Christine Nelson, treasurer John Chapman, and members Hilda Beckett, Rita Cuss, Derek Allen, Eddie Manning, Doris Forth and Tracy Watson. They were elected at an open meeting in the Village Hall on 7th December 1976.
Fund raising events included carol singing, disco and modern dances, a sponsored walk and a cash prize competition, organised by John Chapman.
Stuart Carnson organised invitations to all households, asking people to support the committee. Everyone who booked early was given a Jubilee Crown, free tea and entry to the competitions.
On Jubilee Day, 7th June, 1977, Sally Bridgefoot, the Jubilee Queen, helped by her attendants Carol Watkinson and Trudy Marshall declared the events open.
Events included a fancy dress, decorated bicycles and decorated toys, judged by Mr and Mrs Churchill and Mr and Mrs Hickson. Geoff Mallett and Stuart Carnson organised competitions and sports on the playing field, which had two marquees. Andrew Cuss organised a public address system.
Hilda Beckett and her helpers served a celebration tea, which took three sittings to serve the 400 people who attended. The menu included salad with pork, ham, beef and sausage, followed by fruit and cream, cakes with orange squash and cups of tea. The cost for food was £430.39p.
In the evening there was a Grand Dance in the Village Hall and a disco in a marquee on the playing field for the younger people.
The expenses for this grand event were £1476.5p with £1505.9p raised.
Despite the miserable weather, everyone joined in and had a memorable day.
